Submissions of any film -- fiction, documentary, animation, etc. -- with a love for bikes will be accepted until August 22, 2015 at:torontoveloreelsubmissions@gmail.com

 

In past years, VeloReel has screened more than 50 films in an outdoor bike-in setting under the starry sky with handfuls of free popcorn. Carefully curated by Toronto's all-girl bike gang, The Deadly Nightshades, attendees have had the pleasure of viewing international films such as Bike Lordz Out of Ghana and the beautifully empowering story of Georgena Terry, as well as local short films like, Sex On Wheels, Gonna Have a Good Day and Meaningful Things. Last year's guest lineup was impeccably presented by Cinecycle's Martin Heath, running a one-of-a-kind collection of vintage reel-to-reel films.

This fall, Liberty Village will host an incredible lineup with new and returning filmmakers. Thank you in advance for making this possible!

This years addition to VeloReel's run as one of Canada's only bicycle film festivals was enchanting!  Martin Heath's selection of films from the past were a great addition to our two wheeled imaginations and to our understanding of bicycling and its roots.

Toronto VeloReel Bicycle Film Festival 2014

Toronto VeloReel is ready!  Join us on August 22, 2014 and take in a unique outdoor theatre experience while Martin Heath from Cinecycle presents this year’s lineup.   We are so looking forward to an evening under the stars!   This is VeloReel’s 3^rd  year and we cant wait to hit the road with the show again this year. 

Because we opted to feature Martin Heath and his one of a kind film collection, we will call for 2015 submissions in the fall.  VeloReel would like to thank all the friends that have supported and encouraged the film festival and look forward to many more to come.

For a second year in a row, Toronto VeloReel is heading to Montreal with the 2014 lineup of films.  We would like to thank all the artist film makers in advance for allowing us to share their works and  also like to thank Dislodge for hosting! See you soon!  Detroit, you're up next!

The Bike Awards tonight!

In 2012 VeloReel screened a few films at the Horseshoe Tavern  as part of The Toronto Bike Awards celebration and we had a great time.  Again this year, The Bike Awards have invited us to share part of the 2013 lineup during their presentation.   This is a great event  where people and organizations who have shown leadership and imagination are awarded for their efforts.  We met some amazing self propelled people last year and definitely left inspired.    Come!

Second Annual VeloReel Movie Festival!

Offers Nuit Blanche bike lovers 

an enchanting cinematic experience under the stars.

This is the perfect opening event to start off Nuit Blanche for those exploring Toronto via bicycle, and a great place to meet with friends, enjoy a snack and make a toast before continuing on with the night of art and culture.

 A different type of film festival, Toronto VeloReel is a DIY community event. Located in Liberty Village at a Bike-In Theater, attendees can bring in their bikes and watch the best cycling culture’s short films from 2013. Festival goers are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks, along with blankets and items to share and play with the audience. Free popcorn will be served!

Toronto’s all-girl Midnight Bike Gang/Arts Collective The Deadly Nightshades are curating the festival’s selection of films. This year’s line-up includes exciting films such as Bike Lordz, a documentary on the self-taught, self-invented bicycle in Accra Ghana, dramatic shorts such as Lost Bike Girl from New York City, and street race videos from Toronto’s own celebrity photographer Steve Carty. The reel is currently being finalized, and exciting updates and announcements will be made in the upcoming weeks!

Toronto VeloReel is looking for your BIKE FILM!

In it's debut year the success of VeloReel's line-up of thirteen films included an array of shorts: Bikes are Great, 10 Things I Have Learned About Mountainbiking, and Sex On Wheels, finishing with the feature length "Line of Sight", directed by Benny Zenga and featuring world renowned videographer Lucas Brunelle. Very organically and with the support of some amazing cyclist and artist friends, VeloReel began to travel. Hitting 6 cities in 3 countries from small town Orillia, to Montreal and Detroit, all the way to Havana, Cuba, plans for the next line-up are to extend beyond even more boarders!
The Deadly Nightshades, Toronto's all-girl bike gang slash arts collective will be taking on the role of film curators once again in hopes to cultivate community & celebrate bike culture.
Look out for the initial bike-in screening, early September in the heart of Liberty Village.  To be a part of this growing love for bikes, film and art, please submit by August 1st to torontoveloreelsubmissions@gmail.com.

Toronto VeloReel, is a film festival cultivating community & celebrating bike culture through film. The festival debuted on September 15th in the historic Liberty Village. On November 11, 2012, Toronto VeloReel will visit Orillia, Ontario and projectionist will light up the big screen at The Brownstone Café. This is the Brownstones first adventure in celebrating a film fest of this kind. Bridging a unique urban scene to a small town culture ripe for more cycle culture and community.

The evening will begin with a mixture of short films including; Bikes are great, 10 Things I Have Learned About Mountainbiking, and Sex On Wheels, to name a few. The audience’s heart will get pumping with 10-20 Berlin, a film made of the 1993 Courier World Championship, featuring many original Toronto names. To end off the evening, the audience will awe at Line of Sight, directed by Ontario’s own Benny Zenga, featuring world renowned documentarian and cyclist Lucas Brunelle, “the gnarliest bike videographer in the world.”- Rolling Stone Magazine

Toronto Bicycle Music Festival

On September 15, 2012, 'Toronto VeloReel' launched with the support of a few dozen artists. What a treat it was when 'Toronto Bicycle Music Festival' stopped by the theatre. Check out this video documentation of their visit and their music and definitely check it out again if you were apart of it!

Just in time for TIFF! Toronto VeloReel, is a one day film festival cultivating community & celebrating bike culture through film. The festival debuts September 15th.

To kick off the days events, there will be a peepshow film loop which includes the feature length films; Hit em in the Mouth, a Seattle Bike polo documentary, Cycle Me Home, the tale of Levi and his bike ride home to Budapest after studying abroad in Madrid, and I Felt Your Pulse, a Super 8 film dedicated to Darcy Allan Sheppard.

While hanging out in the courtyard, be sure not to miss the various bike art installations, a short play entitled “Cadillac Kills” and a drop in from the Bicycle Music Festival with musical performances by the Complete Street Band and Garbageface in the afternoon.

As night falls, projections will light up the big screen outdoors for a bike-in style theater. Toronto VeloReel is celebrating it's first year ever this fall! On September 15th the best of Toronto's cycling community and culture will be showcased in the courtyard at 7 Fraser in Liberty village.

There is much more to come, but right now we're looking for submissions! This year's program is being guest curated by The Deadly Nightshades, and they want to see your bike movies! Bike movies you ask? Anything you can think of involving our two-wheeled friend. She can roll by, be the centre of attention or the mode in which you got to your set. They can be 30 seconds or an hour and a half and anywhere in between.
